Major League Quidditch to Air on National Television for Second Consecutive Season
Madison, Wisconsin (August 16, 2018) — Real-life quidditch is coming to national television.
Eleven Sports will televise the finals series and two semifinals series of the 2018 Major League Quidditch (MLQ) Championship in Madison, Wisconsin. The games will be produced by the network and aired on tape delay on Thursday, August 23 at 9:30 pm ET and Friday, August 24 at 10:00 pm ET.
Eleven Sports is available on DIRECTV Channel 623, Verizon Fios Channel 597 and AT&T U-Verse Channel 1665. All games, including the semifinals and finals series, are also being streamed live on the league’s YouTube channel.
The 2018 MLQ Championship kicks off on Saturday, August 18 with the 12 best real-life quidditch teams in the country at Firefighters Memorial Park. The tournament continues on Sunday, August 19 with the semifinals and finals. Tickets are available for purchase here or at the gate.
Quidditch is a mixed-gender, full-contact sport now played by over 500 teams in 29 countries. The rules were adapted from J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter book series, incorporating elements of rugby, dodgeball and basketball.
MLQ is working to make quidditch a professional sport. The league is home to 16 teams across the United States and Canada. The teams recruit star players from college quidditch programs and hold tryouts in the spring.
The MLQ Championship is the league’s marquee event. Madison was selected to host the tournament for the first time in December. The city recently hosted the American Ultimate Disc League Championship Weekend and has previously hosted events like the US Curling Championship and Olympic Trials.
“Madison is everything we could want in a championship location,” said league co-commissioner Ethan Sturm. “The city has a long, rich history of hosting sporting events at all levels.”
The teams will be ranked and seeded by regular season results into a best-of-three single-elimination bracket.
