South Bend, Ind. (Feb. 22, 2022) — Major League Quidditch (MLQ) has announced that the 2022 MLQ North Division Championship will be hosted in South Bend, Ind. at the Indiana Invaders Sports Complex on July 23-24, 2022 in partnership with Visit South Bend Mishawaka.
“Visit South Bend Mishawaka is very excited to welcome Major League Quidditch and the North Division teams to our area. This will be the first ever quidditch tournament that will be held in our city and we are thrilled to add it to our rich sports resume. We are committed to growing this partnership with MLQ for many years to come,” said Nick Kleva, Sports Tourism Manager at Visit South Bend Mishawaka.
The first ever MLQ divisional championship will feature all six North Division teams, including the return of the Rochester Whiteout, after a stint in the East Division, and the Toronto Raiders, who were forced to take a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19. Tickets are now available.
Quidditch is a mixed-gender, full-contact sport played by over 600 teams in 40 countries. The rules, originally adapted from the Harry Potter book series in 2005, incorporate elements of basketball, rugby and dodgeball.
Founded in 2015, MLQ is working to make quidditch a professional sport. The league is home to 16 franchises that compete in three geographic divisions from June to August. Tryouts for the franchises kick off in early March. Final rosters often feature star players from college and club quidditch programs.
The winner of the event will walk away with the divisional crown. The top four teams in the North, after the completion of the regular season, will receive bids to attend the 2022 MLQ Championship in Howard County, Md. from Aug. 20-22. The MLQ Championship is the league’s marquee event and features three competitions in one: the Benepe Cup, the Next Gen Showcase and Take Back the Pitch.
